Inside Quilotoa, one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world

Magic and colors in the middle of the Andes

Painted with beautiful turquoise, green and blue colors, this lagoon of 200 meters deep shows its entire splendor before the sun’s rays. Its wonderful colors can vary depending on the seasons and to the amount of minerals it has.

The crater of a volcano converted into a 3 km wide lagoon was formed by the eruption of the volcano approximately 800 years ago.

You can perform various activities such as:

Hiking around the volcano

The whole journey takes about 4 hours, where you can observe the volcano from all its angles. The maximum height is 3,814 meters above sea level. You will need trekking shoes and warm clothing. On the way, you can see animals such as: deer, wolves of the páramo, rabbits, foxes, páramo birds, among others.

Descent and ascent to the lagoon

There is a marked 280 meters path descend to the lagoon whose, due to its low level of difficulty, can be done by children and adults. The ascent back to the surface requires more physical effort, but if you are not in good physical condition, you can rent a mule that will take you to the starting point.

Boat or kayak trip

Not only can you contemplate the beautiful lagoon, but you can also get into it through a boat ride or kayak enjoying a real turquoise sea in the middle of the Andes.

If you are a photography lover, you will have stunning landscapes to take your best shots. The ideal moments to take a great snapshot are in the morning when the sun rises or in the afternoon when the sun’s rays enhance the colors of the lagoon.

On a clear day, you would be able observe the surrounding peaks, like the Illinizas and Cotopaxi.

How to get to Quilotoa?

To get there you must go to the city of Latacunga (capital of the province of Cotopaxi), once there, then you have to take a bus to Zumbahua –is about two hours ride. From Zumbahua, you only have 15 kilometers left until your destination. You can either travel by bus, van, bicycle or even walk.
